Prime Minister Imran Khan decided to make the South Punjab Secretariat formally operational from October 15 and expressed the hope that this decision would lead to prosperity and development in the backward areas of Punjab.
The Prime Minister made the announcement at a meeting on the establishment and functions of the South Punjab Secretariat.
Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi was present in the meeting while Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Bazdar, Punjab Finance Minister Makhdoom Hashim Jawan Bakht, Chief Secretary Punjab, Additional Chief Secretary for South Punjab and Additional IG South Punjab were present in the meeting through video link.
According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, Imran Khan stressed that the government’s focus was on improving the lives of the common man and directed the administration of South Punjab to fulfill his vision.
He appreciated the efforts of Punjab Chief Minister Usman Bazdar and the Punjab government for setting up the South Punjab Secretariat and said that these concrete steps show the determination of the PTI government to implement the party manifesto.
The Prime Minister lamented that in the past the governments had ignored the real problems of South Punjab.
Stressing on the need to introduce the Provincial Finance Commission Award, the Prime Minister said that “allocating separate funds for South Punjab would usher in a new era of development and prosperity”.
He directed the authorities to distribute powers in a phased manner to ensure smooth functioning of the administrative process and said that they should be kept regularly informed of the progress regarding the South Punjab Secretariat.
During the meeting, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi called on the PTI government to take practical steps to fulfill the aspirations of the people of South Punjab, establish a South Punjab Secretariat, transfer administrative powers and end the sense of deprivation of the people. Highlighted the steps to be taken to address the issues at their doorstep.
The Foreign Minister said that with the establishment of South Punjab Secretariat, the PTI government has fulfilled its promise to the people of South Punjab.
The Foreign Minister proposed a separate annual development program for South Punjab for next year’s budget and quotas for the people of South Punjab for jobs and other jobs under the Punjab Public Service Commission.
He informed the Prime Minister that the Rules of Business of the Punjab Government have been amended to set up a Secretariat for South Punjab and so far 16 Secretaries have been posted in South Punjab.
The Prime Minister was informed that the Departments of Health, Education, Police, Planning and Development, Local Government, Finance and Agriculture have been shifted to South Punjab.
